One key path to better financial standing is better financial understanding. When was the last time you saw your credit report?

If you are trying to get your finances in shape the first step is to know what’s on your credit report. If you don’t know, how can you fix it? This is a great annual habit to get into to make sure you have the most accurate and up-to-date knowledge.

Everyone with credit will have 3 different scores on 3 different reports compiled by the major credit bureaus Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian. You may see your score when you log into your online credit card accounts but that is likely only one of the three - whichever your bureau your credit card company has a relationship with. To get a full view of your financial health you need to see all three.

Each bureau weighs actions slightly differently and may have variations on reporting. You want to make sure there are no errors across the board and that all of your financial information has been reported accurately. Sometimes an error may occur on one report but goes unnoticed until you decide to apply for a mortgage or loan.

Mistakes can take time to correct so you want to make sure you notice any discrepancies before you are making a big financial move.

Where Can You Get Yours?

Every American is entitled to one free copy of their entire credit report each year through the government. You can also access each separate report through their respective credit bureaus for free or for a small fee after the first one. You can request your report easy online through a website established by the Federal Trade Commission - annualcreditreport.com.

Once you have your reports take a look at what is reported. Do you have a good mix of different kinds of debt? How high is your credit utilization? Do you make on-time payments? Your report can tell you a lot about what your habits are at the present. If you are really looking to dig in you would get the most value out of working with a credit professional to create a game plan specifically for you.
