When you are trying to build up your credit you want to try and get rid of any negative marks you may have incurred in the past. One of the things that you may be looking to get rid of is an eviction. How long does an eviction stay on your credit report and is it possible to get rid of them?

How Long Does An Eviction Stick Around?

Evictions are traumatic events for both your personal and family life and your financial life. Like all major credit issues an eviction will stay on your record for 7 years. Though evictions themselves may not show up on all of your credit reports they will be a part of your rental history and any debt associated with it will show up on your credit report.

Additionally, any civil judgements will also show up on your credit report. Civil judgements can be very damaging to your credit and will remain on your record for 7 years whether you pay it off promptly or not.

How Can You Remove An Eviction?

If your circumstances are ideal you may be able to fight an eviction to keep it off of your record. If you can prove in a court that you were evicted illegally or the eviction was unfounded you may be able to erase it from your record.

If you are successful at winning in court to remove your eviction you then have to contact the credit bureaus themselves to get rid of the civil judgement. This may take some time and patience but this is one of the most important parts of the process as it directly affects your credit history the most.
