Taking charge of your credit starts with first understanding it. So how do you get started staying on top of your credit?

Paying attention to your credit is the best way to understand how to improve it. You don’t have to spend a ton of time pouring over it either, you just have to check in every once in a while and make sure you understand what is going on and how your habits are reflected in your credit score and on your credit report.

There are a few simple things you can do right off the bat to st on top of you credit…

Enroll In Your Credit Card’s Credit Monitoring

If you have a credit card chances are you have a credit monitoring too available to you for free already. These tools generally generate a monthly snapshot that shows you your overall credit activity as well as your score. These generally are only reflective of one of your credit scores (not all three) but are a pretty good representation of what is happening with your credit month-to-month.

Enroll In Credit Score Monitoring

If you don’t have a credit card or are not offered monitoring you can easily enroll in another free monitoring tool like Mint, a free budgeting app that also monitors your credit. This app is safe, widely used and very intuitive. The app will show you any changes to your credit score as well as give you tools to pay off debt and manage your spending.

You can also find other free online tools that are secure and safe to use to monitor your credit score.

Request Your Credit Report

A great way to get the full picture of your credit history and activity is to look at your full credit report. You are entitled to a free copy of your full credit report from each credit bureau each calendar year. Each of these reports are more comprehensive than month-to-month score reporting with a full breakdown of transactions and payments and how they factor in to your score and report.

Why Knowing Matters

You cannot take meaningful action in rehabilitating your finances if you don’t know what is going on. Knowing what is in your credit report or what your credit score is is the first step in staying on top of your credit. Once you have an idea of where to start you can formulate next steps and how to make improvements.
